FAQ

General

Which advantages does the use of drones have?

Drones open up completely new perspectives and business areas. Operations from the sky were always topic of interest. However, until recently the realization was only possible with man-carrying helicopters or airplanes. The cost-benefit ratio was often disproportionate and the possible applications quickly became unattractive. The drone technology has allowed for a breakthrough. A large variety of services, starting with aerial pictures up to survey work, can now be realised flexibly and at a reasonable price. There are nearly any limits for your creativity. Still, safety should take top priority and participation in air traffic should not be underestimated.

How long can drones fly?

It depends on the capacity of the battery and what kind of drone we use. We try to realize flight times from 15-30 minutes, but we have more than just one battery. Changing a battery costs only a few minutes, that means we can fly the drones for a few hours, if you forget the battery changing.

Which weather conditions do we need for drone flying?

Decisive is the opinion of the drone pilot and the manufacturer’s data of the drone systems. Basic principle is, nice weather = nice pictures. It makes sense to choose nice weather conditions, to get the best result of air videos and air pictures. The weather is not very important for inspection and survey flights. Preparation of data is still possible with drizzling rain. Strong fog and wind speed over 4bft (28km/h; 7,9m/s; 16kt) are criterion for exclusion for safety drone flights and usable survey results.

Where are drone flights allowed?

The capabilities for drone flights are far-reaching. Only in few areas is it forbidden to fly. These include flights they are less than 1,5km away from the next airport, flights over people collections, accidents, industrial facilities and nuclear power stations. Frequently are no-fly zones within national parks. It doesn’t mean, that all of these mentioned areas of operations are not realisable at all. The company Luftprofile GmbH made it a few times possible to fly with their drones in general no-fly zones via special permits. Very good connections to the agency and long flight experience in radio controlled flying and real pilot flights turn to account.

How far and high is it allowed to fly with drones?

Technically distances over one kilometre between professional drone systems and pilots are possible. However, the laws restrict the range. The pilot needs to keep sight contact with the drone at all time. Distances from up to 400m are possible. Height limits are usually around 100 meters. With special permission height limits may be raised.

Who can offer commercial flights?

Commercial drone pilots need a certificate of competence and a rising permission. These can be obtain from the regional authorities. In the near future the government will change the law. Commercial drone pilots then have to attend a training. These consist of theoretical basics of aviation and flight practise. We, Luftprofile GmbH, offer these trainings already and when the law is changing are we able to give our graduates an equal certificate, if the participation was successful. This certificate will be crucial for applying of a rising permission.

How does it work with a permit to fly?

Every commercial drone pilot has to have a relevant permissions for his flights. There are single and general rise permissions. With the general permissions drone flights up to 10 kg departure weight are realisable on the same or next day. The company Luftprofile GmbH has general rise permissions in Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. In other cities, we will apply for single permissions. Normally it takes only a week to receive the permission.

Does one need a liability insurance?

Yes! For commercial and private use of drones a special liability insurance is required. It is differentiated between private and commercial insurances, so take particular care that your possible events of damage are covered. Especially non-commercial users often forget about this aspect. Private liability insurances usually do not cover any model aircraft, no matter whether it is a multicopter or an airplane. Luftprofile GmbH has the competence and offers assistance.

Multimedia

What is the difference between a professional drone camera and a consumer drone?

A professional drone camera perfectly suits the particular project requirements. Different components can be mounted and unmounted in a short time, for example high definition professional cameras, video transmission and battery systems. Consumer drones are sufficient for most of the private requirements, but the range of application is very limited.

Why do pictures not turn out blurred?

The cameras are mounted on the drone with a so-called gimbal. The gimbal is stabilised on two or three axis, depending on the model, and compensates movements from the drones. For example, if the drone turns to the left, the gimbal tilt to the right in the same angle. This happens with all move directions and allow for smooth tracking shots. Wind effects are compensated in the same way. On the ground we use handheld gimbals to manage stable handheld shots.

Why is there a high demand for aerial pictures from drones?

People have been enthusiastic about aerial photos and videos for a long time already. Until a few years ago, it was only possible to realize them with helicopters or airplanes. This expensive effort was out of proportion with most projects. However, today the demand for aerial pictures can be satisfied with the cheap and flexible drone technology. Nearly everyone wants to use the benefits and profit from air pictures in their projects.

How quickly can pictures of my home be realised?

Luftprofile GmbH has a general rising permission for Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein und Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. If the weather is good, we are ready to take off in the above-named federal states quickly and can take impressive pictures of your home. If you live in another state, we apply for a single rising permission and are ready to take off in a maximum of one week.

What characterizes a good service provider for photo and film production?

There are many factors which matter. The interaction between the team, know-how and equipment are of high relevance. Furthermore, it is a benefit if the company has a wide network in the photo and film industry. Nearly every customer wish can be realised. Like always, the chemistry between customer and service provider has to be right, otherwise all other factors are worthless. We at Luftprofile GmbH have the required ingredients and we always try to work at eye level with our customers and never lose track of the goal.

Services

What makes a survey drone so specific?

Drones are for taking air pictures and usually not applicable or qualified for professional survey flights. Our survey drones are equipped with special software and hardware. We use RTK systems, high definition cameras and, if required, LiDar systems. All components are only used for survey services. That is the important part of professional order transaction with drone systems for survey flights. We, Luftprofile Gmb, follow these principles and set high standards in accuracy and reproducibility.

Can a drone measure any terrain?

Basically the answer is YES. However, there are some constraints:

  • Free view on the terrain
  • Border areas should be treeless
  • Sufficient illumination and, if possible, no large areas of shade
  • possibility for initial calibration and GCP placement

Which qualification with drone systems does a ground surveyor need?

Far reaching knowledge is necessary, e.g. extensive know-how in flying and technical handling of drone systems. Furthermore, profound knowledge in the usage of survey systems and a professional background is needed as we deal with high-precision industrial applications. The responsible staff at Luftprofile GmbH is trained and has the knowledge to operate these challenging survey flights with drones professionally.

Are there limits for rendering?

No, there are no limits for your creativity. Rendering are very valuable in 3d simulations. We realize impressive compositions with pictures and videos. Using programs like Blender or Cinema 4D, we are able to create almost any design which will then be integrated and rendered into the pictures and videos. Although only consisting partly of real images, the compositions look very realistic.

How significant are survey flights?

We only use drone systems that satisfy the high quality demands of survey flights. The use of high-resolution cameras is indispensable but our trained pilots also play an important role in the creation of assessment material. We deliver photos and videos that allow a professional assessment of the respective object. In conclusion, the survey flights are significant and a lot more efficient, flexible and inexpensive.

Are you aware of the safety measures on construction sites?

We know the behaviour rules, safety regulations and the use of the necessary personal protective equipment from several projects on construction sites. The close cooperation with experience builders is also a great advantage, therefore we learn about new regulations or changes first hand. Personal protective equipment such as safety shoes, helmets and warning vests exist.

Training

Is anyone capable of flying a drone?

In general anybody can learn how to fly a drone. Those, who have basic technical knowledge and good motoric abilities, have it somewhat easier in the beginning. With our different training programs, we can meet almost every requirement. Both private and commercial drone pilot are in goods hands in our special training courses and are ready for the safe handling of drone systems afterwards. Also you – guaranteed!

What is the difference between rookie and professional trainings?

In the one-day rookie drone training, the necessary technical and legal principles as well as practical skills are taught. The three-day professional drone training course is designed to ensure that the graduates acquire knowledge and a certificate which allows them to fly drones with a take-off weight above 2 kg. The theoretical and practical elements are much more comprehensive.

Do I need to own a drone as participant?

You do not need a drone to participate in our trainings. The only requirement is interest in drone technology and the handling of it. This applies for private and commercial drone pilots. For the practical training part the required equipment is provided by Luftprofile GmbH. At the end of the event, we will give participants individual advice for most suitable drones.

Do you offer personal trainings?

We also offer training programs for individual participants. In a preliminary conversation we exchange concerns and ideas with the prospective customer. We then tailor the training programs individually to the participant and work on the identified core topics. This concept allows a fast and effective learning success. However, an individual participation is more expensive than a group training.

What is more difficult: flying a RC helicopter or aircraft?

In contrast to the model helicopter, the stability of a model aircraft is higher. In order to keep a helicopter straight in the air, the pilot must operate all control functions at the same time. This is a great challenge if you are new to operating RC helicopters. An aircraft flies steadily, even if not all functions are controlled at the same time. This makes it a bit easier for the learner. Therefore, we only offer three-day courses for the helicopters. For ambitious students, we also offer training for airplanes on a two-day course. But the three-day course is recommended.
